Missions Ministry Board
Answering the Call
The goal of the Missions Team is to promote God’s love in the world through compassionate action. Join us as we participate in various missions, including community outreach, food pantry assistance, social justice initiatives, disaster response, and civil and human rights advocacy.
Community Food Support
Join us in making a meaningful impact on hunger insecurities in our area by supporting our two food support locations.
The Mt. Sinai Congregational Church’s Island Heart Food Pantry, located at 643 Middle Country Road in Middle Island, provides essential food services every Wednesday from 1pm to 4pm. Over 10,000 individuals are helped each year at this valuable mission location.
In addition, we operate an Emergency Food Cupboard in our church, assisting clients on Tuesdays from 9:15am t0 11:45am.
Reach out to us for aid or to contribute donations that truly make a difference in our community's well-being.
Community Well-being
Activities include gathering school supplies for local students and winterwear for adults and children and toy drives. Our Crafters knit and crochet blankets, shawls and hats for SBU Hospital patients, including babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Mt. Sinai Congregational Church also supports the Sunshine Alternative High School and Prevention Center, which provides programs for at-risk youth and their families.
Justice: Advocacy and Action
Stand with our Justice Team as we tackle critical civil and human rights issues and participate in initiatives promoting Open and Affirming actions. Be part of impactful solidarity events, engaging discussions, and passionate advocacy efforts aimed at creating a fairer and more inclusive society. Activities have included advocating for Gender Violence Prevention and Gun Violence Prevention, support for LGBTQ+ organizations, participating in Building Bridges in Brookhaven (a grassroots coalition of individuals and organizations seeking to cultivate friendships and alliances among the diverse communities of Brookhaven Town) and support for Suffolk County Police Outreach programs for seniors, children, and Narcan training to help save a life endangered by drug incidents.
Mt. Sinai Church Joins
Interfaith Vigil on the Moral and Human Consequences of
Mass Immigrant Deportations
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, members of Mt Sinai Congregational Church joined an interfaith vigil at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Huntington Station on the moral and human consequences of mass immigrant deportations. The vigil was entitled, “Our Huddled Masses Breathing Fear”.
The two-hour program headed by Richard Koubek of LI Jobs with Justice, included presentations of faith leaders from several towns across Suffolk County, as well as representatives from LI Immigrant Justice Alliance, the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, the Elmont Cultural Center, and a lawyer representing several deported persons. The accompanying musical program was very meaningful and symbolic, led by guitar, with such songs as This Land is Your Land, Deportees, Lady of the Harbor and America the Beautiful.
The most powerful presentation, however, was given via zoom link from El Salvador, by two brothers previously living on LI who had been taken by ICE agents from their routine court appointed check-in and subsequently deported. The young men, aged 20 and 18, Jose and Josue Trego Lopez, had been living in America with their family for 10 years, had kept all their court appointments and had no criminal history of any kind. The elder brother reported the terrible treatment he and his brother had received at the hands of ICE, from their initial arrest, through two deportation facilities in the US and the final drop off in El Salvador. Many of those gathered in the church were in tears, with their heads shaking in disbelief as the story of the brothers unfolded.
This is just one example of the type of treatment our immigrant friends and neighbors are facing.
In addition to attending the vigil, our members signed a statement, along with almost 200 others, demanding:
· An immediate end to ICE’s terror and the mass deportation of our immigrant neighbors
· Those seeking asylum or at risk of deportation receive due process, including a fair hearing in court
· Government officials stop using rhetoric that demonizes immigrants
· Local police refuse collaboration and cooperation with ICE
· Congress must enact much needed reforms to our broken immigration laws and system
The vigil was covered by both Newsday and News 12.
